چکیده

In recent years, the gender perspective in scientific research and sex differences biological studies on emotional disorders have become increasingly important. However, bias basic anxiety depression is still far from being covered. This review addresses study of field using animal models that consider this issue so far. What can preclinical tell us what are their main limitations? First, we describe behavioral tests most frequently used to assess depressive-like anxiety-like behaviors rodents. Then, analyze findings, strengths, weaknesses rodent depression, dividing them into three categories: chromosome complement-biased differences; gonadal hormone-biased environmental-biased differences. Regardless model used, none reproduce all characteristics such complex multifactorial pathologies as depressive disorders; however, each contributes elucidating bases underlie these disorders. The importance highlighted considering responses emerge model.

What behaviourism can (and cannot) tell us about brain imaging

Robert Shulman belongs to a rare breed. On the one hand, he is a true pioneer of MRI, a technology that has galvanised cognitive neuroscience by allowing researchers to trace the flux of metabolic activity in the living brain under diverse experimental conditions. On the other, he is a staunch behaviourist who believes that terms like ‘attention’ and ‘working memory’ should be expunged from sci...

What artifice can and cannot tell us about animal behavior

Artifice-the manipulation of social and environmental stimuli-is fundamental to research in animal behavior. State-of-the-art techniques have been developed to generate and present complex visual stimuli. These techniques have unique strengths and limitations. However, many of the issues with synthetic animation and virtual reality are common to playback experiments in general, including those ...

What neurobiology cannot tell us about addiction.

Molecular neurobiological studies have yielded enormous amounts of valuable information about neuronal response mechanisms and their adaptive changes. However, in relation to addiction this information is of limited value because almost every cell function appears to be involved. Thus it tells us only that neurons adapt to 'addictive drugs' as they do to all sorts of other functional disturbanc...

What Paint Can Tell Us

Objective: The notion that artistic capability increases with dementia is both novel and largely unsupported by available literature. Recent research has suggested an emergence of artistic capabilities to be a by-product of involuntary behaviour seen with dementia, as opposed to a progression in original thinking (de Souza, et al., 2010). A far more complementary explanation comes from Hanneman...

Processing scalar implicature: What can individual differences tell us?

There is much current debate about processing scalar implicature, but a considerable body of empirical evidence seems to support the idea that it requires additional time and effort on the part of the hearer (e.g. Breheny, Katsos and Williams 2005, Bott and Noveck 2004 and many others). The goal of this study was to contribute to our understanding of the cognitive processes that go on as compre...
